Mindful Eating: The Key to managing long term ideal body weight

February 13, 2013

Greetings and Happy New Year! I'm eager to share with all of you some new ideas and concepts to help us (me too!) get you healthy and your body in shape in 2013.

I wanted to set the tone this new year by discussing the concept of Mindful Eating. What does that mean? Well in it's simplest form it is becoming more conscious of what foods you are choosing to eat throughout the day.

The first step in creating Mindful Eating is  that you essentially: map out to the best of your ability, what your food choices will be throughout the day. When you have figured out what your day will be like. Make the determination of whether you will be eating at home, eating out or if you should be bringing foods from home.

Here is a simple checklist to help you make the most of your dietary concerns:

1. Eat a healthy breakfast. Cereal grains, boiled egg, yogurt, whole wheat (bagels, breads,) They have it right when it was said "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day"!

2. Take a lunch from home or plan where you would like to eat out. Bringing a meal from home is great, but if you have to eat out evaluate the lunch spots that are to be your choices. Have a menu on hand or "Google" your location and see what comes up on your smartphone! That way you don't have to show up at the restaurant already starving and then prudent choices fly out the window.

3. Have fruit or healthy snacks on hand to satiety your palate in between meals.

4. Drink plenty of water. At least 1/2 your body weight in fluid ounces.

5. Don't skip meals!!!!!

Mindful eating is keeping it simple and on point.  Change is about creating new environments.
