Welcome to 2014!!

Hey everybody.

Welcome to the year 2014! Although we are only a few days into this new year, I think we should begin to prioritize what our goals will be for the upcoming year. I'm not a big believer in resolutions.

When we transition into a new year we often feel that it's necessary to make resolutions because that is what is expected of us. I think this year should be about what you don't want to do and from there we can focus on what we want to do. Losing weight, exercising more, making more $$$, spending more time doing this or that are all commendable, but the best resolutions are the ones that you start doing right away, the small habits that you start creating. In order to change a behavior you need to recognize it as something that needs changing. Change might seem overwhelming, but if you immediately begin to make small, incremental changes to alter a pattern of behavior, changing a negative behavior to a positive one is much more achievable.

An example of a typical New Year's resolution is, " I'm going to start walking Lake Merritt on January 1st" . What happens when the 1st rolls around and you have to work or pay a bill or travel out of town. So much for the January 1st resolution of walking the lake. Not hitting this goal can make it easier to start missing other goals and pretty soon you are dragging yourself through yet another year on autopilot, feeling guilty for yet again letting your goals fall by the wayside

Make change by taking small, positive actions first and reinforcing them by acting immediately. If you want to get better at flossing your teeth more regularly, start by flossing a few teeth each night; in this way you can begin to train your behavior and manage your expectations and will begin the process of hard wiring your mental focus for success further down the road. It takes 2 weeks for a habit to stick. It's up to you whether your habits are bad ones or good ones....make 2014 a year of good habits, small but mighty!
