Due to the craze of low calorie foods and the abomination of table sugar in the lives of most Americans there are a plethora of sugars currently on the market and although they help to keep that sweet taste in your mouth they can have a different reaction in your body.
We all know about table sugar. How about these sugars:
Agave: A healthy carbohydrate that's 40% sweeter than table sugar. It is made from the sap of the Mexican cactus plant. Agave is used in teas, health drinks, nutrition bars, desserts, and cocktails. 1 serving = 16 grams of carbs! ( 25 calories the same as table sugar)
Brown rice Syrup: Classified as an organic sugar. Brown rice syrup is used in baked goods, cereals, prepared foods, candies, seasoning and sauces. This sugar because of it's density (maltose) stays longer in your blood stream ( 1 1/2 hr) and helps to give you even levels of energy throughout the day. 1 serving = 55 calories
Stevia: Used in coffee and tea as a tabletop sweeter, baked goods, sodas, it is 200-300 times sweeter than sugar but can have a bitter taste! Might not be as good as table sugar.
Sucanat: Because of it's dark color and richness in molasses. It may change the color of some foods it's used in. Might be the best sugar because of it high trace minerals of potassium, iron, calcium, and magnesium.
Sucralose: Generic name " Splenda", 600 times sweeter than sugar. Holds up well to heat. Good in teas, coffee and baked goods.
Despite these sugars on the market in a majority of the foods stuffs we eat the old adage remains true. MODERATION IS THE KEY!!!!! So watch your serving.
