Are you eating fresh?
It’s summer time and the farmer’s market is packed with healthy fruits and vegetables that will taste delicious, give you energy, and keep you slim and trim! What sort of produce should you be buying June through August? What are some tasty snacks and meals you can enjoy after working out at NEXT LEVEL? Here is a quick guide to eating fresh this season
Seasonal Fruits:
Apricots—slice in halves, drizzle a little honey and sprinkle some nuts with a dollop of Greek yogurt (Fage) for a healthy treat
Blackberries, Blueberries, Raspberries, Strawberries—yogurt “parfaits”, bake them in muffins, add them to your oatmeal, make a breakfast smoothie! You can never go wrong with berries! Also these fruits are a great source of anti-oxidants.
Cherries—can you say homemade cherry pie? It takes a lot of work but all of the effort will burn off a slice (just keep it at one! Treats are good, just in moderation J )
Plums—you can eat these in “sweet” meals, or use them to accent different meat dishes, they work well in different sauces!
Seasonal Veggies:
Asparagus—drizzle it with olive oil, sea salt, lemon.
Eggplant—lightly bread it and bake (not fry!) with a little tomato sauce and a slice of low fat mozzarella
Carrots—steam, season with fresh dill, salt, pepper
Celery—try it with organic 1 tbs almond butter
Broccoli/Cauliflower, Zucchini- steam any of these and mix it in a pasta dish to add more flavor, fiber, and reduce your overall calories.

Cucumbers, Radishes—slice them up, add to a salad
Fennel—tastes great as an accent to fresh fish!
Peppers, Snow Peas—Both are perfect for a stir fry!
Potatoes—roast the sweet ones for healthy “fries” that taste great with a homemade aioli!
Spinach—wilted with red pepper flakes and sauteed garlic, salt, pepper
Tomatoes—slice up with fig balsamic, drizzle of olive oil, slice of fresh mozzarella and basil
Next time you go to your Saturday morning KFT class, stop by the farmer’s market after! Eating fresh and eating well does a body good.
Preparing these foods should be as simple as possible. Don't use alot of high heat as this can destroy the nutrition in the food. Most of these foods should be stir fried at high heat to get the outside crisp and the inside nice and juicy. In the next online blog, I'll provide you recipes that you can use to prepare delicious meals for yourself and your family.
Cheers!

I have a friend who drinks protein shakes and maintains a somewhat healthy diet. Would protein shakes help me work towards a healthy physique? also, what would be a good meal schedule on workout days in general?
