Hey folks. In my last blog I was discussing the benefits of a High protein and Low carbohydrate diet. I wanted to take the time to lay out some ideas I have about what comprises such a diet .
Protein can be from both plant and animal sources. Some examples of plant proteins are:
Oatmeal
Rice
Beans
Nuts
Legumes
Fruits
Vegetables
Some examples of animal proteins are:
Beef
Chicken
Fish
Pork
How one eats these foods, (prepared vs. processed) can also determine how energy is supplied to our bodies.
It is important to note that portion size and food pairing are paramount to healthy eating. Food pairing is combining equal parts of carbohydrate & protein (plant, animal) to help a person get the most nutrients you can from each sitting of food consumption.
Below I have included a sample meal of a low carbohydrate and high protein diet:
Prevention Magazine offers a few great examples of high protein, low carb meals; as an added bonus, they are also low calorie! You can't go wrong with these healthy choices:
- For Breakfast: Smoothie
- For Lunch: Enjoy a Chef's Salad
thin strips; 5 sliced olives; 1 tomato, diced; 1/2 green bell pepper, diced; and 1
Tbsp sliced almonds. Toss with 1 Tbsp balsamic vinegar and 1 tsp olive oil. For
dessert, have 1/2 c low-fat frozen yogurt. 410 calories.
- For Dinner Out: No Time to Cook? Order Chinese
Steamed Veggies (ask for sauce on the side to save calories)
Hope this can give you some ideas.
